Kitchen Remodel - How to Decide If It's For You
By V Price
Have you ever been in your kitchen and you noticed, much to your dismay, that one of your countertops was chipped? And then you tried to open the cabinet drawer where the silverware is and the pull came of the screw and you couldn't open the cabinet. Then you noticed other things about your kitchen: other cabinets are falling apart, the dishwasher doesn't work half the time, one of your other countertops is broken, and the list goes on and on.
It's then you come to the conclusion: It's time to remodel the kitchen and your heart just sinks. Your worried about the cost, the cosmetics of the kitchen, what about new appliances, should you hire a professional, should you do it yourself, oh, and did I say, the cost factor? Yes, this is what happens when you live in a house for awhile. Things break down and the homeowner is looking at the 'moola' situation. The kitchen is very important in the home. It's one of the most used rooms in the house. Everybody goes to the kitchen for something to drink, or a snack, or just hang out, especially when friends are over. It seems like everybody wants to hang out in the kitchen. Many things must be decided in a kitchen remodel. Do you want new and updated appliances, do you want to change the functionality of the kitchen or maybe expand. There is a bright side, however, to all this. Remodeling a kitchen is a great way to make your home new again. In fact, if it's done right, a kitchen can actually be a fun place to be. What is the first thing to consider? Whether or not you will hire a contractor and even a decorator. How much money can you spend? What is your skill level of construction? Will you be making changes that will require an electrician or plumber? Will your remodeling be congruent with building codes? If you do decide to hire a professional or contractor, shop around. Make sure they are for real and if they have BBB complaints. Also, consult your friends and neighbors to see if they have any recommendations. Something else you want to consider: Traffic flow. Just think about your kitchen now. How many people are in your kitchen? Is it crowded, especially when you have friends over? You see, if you want to have more than one person in your kitchen at a time, you might need to have more room around the main workspace. Do you have a lot of parties? If you do, then you might need to consider an open floor plan so you or the cook can interact with your guests. If you don't really know about all this, then it might be time to hire a decorator. The decorator will figure out the actual dimensions you will need to have in order for the traffic to flow throughout your kitchen, and they will figure out the best design based on how you plan to use your kitchen. Keep in mind that you will be faced with a decision about new appliances. For instance, do you really need a new dishwasher, a huge refrigerator, or even a wine cooler? How about a new stove or a separate ice maker? Just remember, the more appliances you have, the less cabinet space you'll have, and that can make a very crucial situation if your kitchen is small. There's no 2-ways about it. Any type of kitchen remodel, large or small, can be difficult, frustrating and stressful. Before you do it, it might be good for you to have already decided a few things, in addition to what you have already decided, for instance: What cabinets will look good in my remodeled kitchen? Have I really figured out a new design for my kitchen or am I just going to replace stuff like the countertops and some appliances? And most of all: How much will all of this set me back financially? Whatever you decide, when it's all said and done, it can make a huge difference in your home and the kitchen will be the place that everybody wants to be.
