What's There to Improve About My Home? - Ways to Make Small Improvements

By Kathleen Whitlow

When you think that it is time for a change in terms of the look of the exterior of your home, there are some small improvements that you can make that will have a big pay-off. Improving your house does not always mean that you have to put a ton of time, effort and money into making the changes. Sometimes all it takes is a tiny little fix to make your home look just right.

One of the first things that you can do is to paint your house. Sometimes, when you purchase a home, you end up focusing so much on the decorating for the inside that you neglect what people initially see, the exterior. Painting your house is a relatively inexpensive way to upgrade the look of your home without breaking the bank.

The coloring that you choose for your home should me slightly conducive to the look of the neighborhood (you don't want to be the sore-thumb house that sticks out for the wrong reasons). Also, choose colors that will look good in all seasons, as well as at night or in the daytime. The number one thing though to consider when choosing the color of the paint that you will use is to pick something that you really like, something that catches your eye and is aesthetically appealing to you.

Another inexpensive way to improve the exterior look of your house is to repair anything that may be broken. Whether it be a gutter that is broken, a leaky roof, chipped sidewalk or walkway, broken step, or anything that could be a safety hazard, hindrance, or eye-sore.

Sometimes exterior home improvements can be as easy as just cleaning something that hasn't been cleaned in awhile. Take windows for instance. A dirty window can really be an eye-sore for you and for anyone who is looking at your house. Taking out the glass window panes, cleaning them with water, vinegar and newspaper (I know it sounds crazy but it works) and put them back up can make a whole world of difference in your homes aesthetic appeal.

Some other home improvements that can be made to the exterior of your house could be to plant a garden; either one that is a focal point to the front of the house, with flower beds, or one that is in the backyard, to build a deck with the help of family and friends, to plant some trees (this helps you give back to the environment at the same time), or to even just hang decorations such as wreaths and have your home well-lit with spotlights.
