First you have to be aware of any plants that you bring into the space. Many plants that are beautiful to look at can be toxic to touch or eat. Unfortunately dogs aren't very cautious, and they will taste anything and everything that you bring into the house. Be certain to do a little research before bringing plant life into the dog's environment.
You should also be aware of small decorative items. If these are left within easy reach of a dog's mouth, they could become a chew toy, or even a choking hazard for unwary pets.
As far as style, you will save yourself a lot of trouble by making sure that your possessions are machine washable. Dogs sometimes make messes, it is part of the experience, ensuring that it is easy to clean up those messes is a way of making the situation less stressful on both you and your pet.
Covers are another good way to protect your possessions. Things such as couch covers, sofa plastic, and other easy to replace or wash items will ensure that your home is not destroyed beyond repair, when your puppy gets too excited.
Another important feature to consider is entryways. Dogs love to roll around in the mud, and very few can be trained to stop and use a dirt mat on the way in. You should make sure that the entrance to the home is well protected. You can also line these walkways with mats to force dogs, and even their human counterparts, to wipe whether they remember to or not.
A dog's tail is another factor when decorating your home. These appendages can be long, shaggy, and hazardous, if you have free standing or low hanging items in your home. Try streamlining the space, decorating in such a way that there is a lot of floor space and room to walk through. Place delicate items higher up, on secure shelving or stands, and out of the way of unsuspecting puppy paws.
A dog is a wonderful companion that can do a lot to enhance the quality of your life. But they are also living creatures that need to be considered when developing an environment around them. It is important to keep your pup in mind when decorating your home, to be sure that they are as comfortable as possible, and to protect the look and feel of your home.
