Home Improvement Made a Little Simpler
By Matt Thames
Home improvement has endless opportunities, but sometimes we are forced to make unplanned repairs. Of course it is more desirable to make home improvements by choice than to have to do them. But, the truth is, when something breaks it is best to just go ahead and do it right.
If you have a water leak or pipe breakage, it is an opportunity to replace that old drywall or paneling you have been meaning to do. Popcorn ceilings are not the prettiest anymore, and that can seem like a big job to take on. But,if you do it right, it can be smooth going. You will need to decide if you are going to replace the drywall or refinish the drywall. A possibility is to scrape what you can off and make the finish texturized.
It might seem like a simpler task to refinish than to replace drywall. But, if the drywall is damaged at all or the popcorn is not coming down easily, it may be easier to replace it. In a smaller room it is easier. Old paint and popcorn usually sticks to the drywall, especially in the seams, and the nail holes are harder to patch. If you have a smaller room, it may be easier to pain.
Another good trick to cover the seams or gaps around the edges is to go ahead and put up some crown molding. Crown molding not only covers the imperfect seams around the perimeter of the room, but also makes the room look better. You almost cant go wrong with crown molding; it almost always makes a room look better and more elegant. Crown molding is an easy project that even the greenest home improver can do. You only need a couple of tools, a miter and coping saw and a nail gun which is much easier than hand nailing. Caulk up the seams and the nail holes and you are ready for paint.
All the tools that you need can be easily rented from the local home improvement center for minimal costs. These two things, cleaning the popcorn off a ceiling and adding crown molding can make a huge difference in any room and they are both rather simple projects. Any additional tips or advice that you may need can be found at your local home improvement center or hardware store and any specific questions can be looked up online. These two projects should be easy enough for anyone to tackle and nobody should be afraid of trying them his or herself.
When you decide to tackle a remodeling job or performing routine maintenance on your home, make sure you have all the tools and materials on hand. For more ideas on home improvement ideas, go to homeimprovementthoughts.com
