Some suggested sewing projects for beginners

Totes, pillows, blankets, tunics are some suggested first sewing projects

Some popular projects for beginners at sewing shops and lounges:

Grocery Totes: Quick, easy and green. Free pattern available at Alewivesfabric.com.

Pillows: Instant gratification for home. Little throw pillows add a pop of color to a room; big floor pillows can be used for seating.

Baby Blankets: They take just 1 1/4 yards each of two different flannel fabrics. Soft and fun.

Floorcloths: Fabric decoupaged onto a canvas background with acrylic gloss.

Pajama Pants: Once you get to know your sewing machine, 2 3/4 yards of cotton fabric will give you a new nighttime outfit.

"Turning 20" quilt: A pattern that uses large chunks of fabric that show off the designs while coming together easily into a bed-size quilt. (The name comes from the 20 fabrics turned into a quilt.)

"Anna Tunic," by Amy Butler: No zippers or buttonholes, and the instructions are thorough and well-illustrated.
