Setting a Theme For Your Party

Setting a Theme For Your Party

By Simon G Burke

So your party's all planned out, the table is set, and you're just waiting for guests to arrive. But there seems to be something missing—something to tie your menu and décor together. Chances are you don't have a party theme. Every party needs a theme, whether it's a color scheme, a music or film genre, or an overall look. It's what guides all your decisions from the food to the decorations. With a theme in mind, you can coordinate all your choices, so your party is more organized and has a distinct, recognizable look.

One way to create a party theme is to use a dominant color. Often, it's the occasion that defines your colors—red and green for Christmas, red or pink for Valentine's Day. You don't always have to follow them, but they give you a good idea of what sets the mood for the occasion. You can use two complementary colors for added interest, but never use more than three as it just makes the place look confusing.

Your table centerpiece can also set the theme for your event. After all, food is always the center of attention at the party, and an attractive centerpiece is sure to catch your guests' eye. It doesn't have to be elaborate, but it does have to suit the occasion. Spring flowers work well for an Easter party, while a carved pumpkin would be perfect for Halloween. Use one large centerpiece for a buffet setup, and put smaller versions of the same piece on each of the tables. Look for one that matches your color scheme for a more unified look.

These days, people are also experimenting with cupcake decorations as part of the party theme. Cupcakes are really easy to decorate, and they're much easier to make than cakes. Even store-bought cupcakes can look really impressive with the right decorations. Use colored frosting to create interesting designs on each cake, whether it's animals, hearts, patterns, or even personalized messages. Top them off with edible cake toppers and you've got a nice dessert and an impressive arrangement at the same time!
